No more suffering, no more tears

If the cross offers us an anchor in life – something to hold on to when suffering comes – then the Bible has another key fixed point that offers real hope on this issue.

Revelation 21 speaks about a new heaven and a new earth:

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

When people ask, “How long will God let evil flourish?” the Christian answer is that there will be an end to this. God will ‘call time’ and then there will be no more suffering of any type. If this were not so, then the Christian response to suffering would be partial. We need both the cross and the vision of the end to understand fully God’s plan to deal with the evil and suffering in the world.
