Washing their feet (though it’s not as atmospheric)

The washing of his disciples’ feet (John chapter 13 verses 1-7) is perhaps the most iconic example in the Gospels of Jesus coming to human beings as a humble servant despite his divine nature. This was the job of the most menial slave in the household. When Jesus did this it was a sign of the fact that he was to pour out his very life for the benefit of humanity.

People are often struck, however, by the way in which Jesus lived his whole life not for his own comfort or benefit but to be a blessing to others. For example:
  • The sick. He patiently met the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those who came to him.
  • The outcasts. Jesus was not afraid to touch lepers, prostitutes, and others considered unclean in his culture.
  • His friends. Though they often failed him or misunderstood, Jesus nurtured the lives of his followers and valued their friendship as a support to him.
