What happened at the cross?

Billy Graham has spoken to more people about the cross than any other individual in history. His organisation put together this contemporary graffiti-style presentation.

What happened at the cross is both simple and yet a deep mystery. In less than four minutes the video clip above tells you all you need to know, linking it to the deepest need of human beings and placing it within the whole story of the Bible. But the Bible contains a multitude of images to convey a full picture of what happened there and countless books have been written about each of these.

  • Keeping it simple. The most famous verse in the bible sums it up in one verse. What more do you need to know? God loves you … and he proved it by making the greatest sacrifice he could because he knew nothing less would suffice.
  • So why the complexity? Finite human language struggles to describe the actions of an infinite God. Nearly every explanation or image of the cross seems to get us 90% of the way to the heart of it but we end up needing other images to complete the picture. To be honest I would be suspicious if we could fully describe such a deep mystery more easily. Someone once said, “Mystery does not defy exploration but it is that which may not be exhausted by our exploration”. In other words, we can and should try to understand the cross as deeply as we can but we may find that there is still more we that we will never truly discover.

At time of writing, video clips of the BBC mini-series The Passion is still available on You Tube in 10-minute sections. This focuses on the final week of Jesus’ life and was made by people with no religious ‘axe to grind’ The links:
