Evidence for the resurrection

He examined things as a sceptic and found that his case was blown away …

Consider the key elements of evidence:
  • Empty tomb. The failure to produce a corpse and instantly discredit Christianity is an important fact. Everyone agreed, believers and non-believers alike; the tomb was empty.
  • Women as the first witnesses. In Jesus’ day, women could not be witnesses in court so it took courage for the story to credit them with the discovery.
  • 515 eye-witnesses. Including sceptics …  This is well beyond wishful-thinking or hallucination.
  • Willing to face martyrdom. The early believers knew Jesus was alive / had spent time with him; they would not have died for a lie.
  • The accounts are very early. Identifiable witnesses were alive and could be examined. This is not some late-in-time myth but something publicly proclaimed within weeks of Jesus’ death.
  • The greatest lawyer who ever lived said, “The evidence is so overwhelming … leaves no room for doubt”

Similar material was produced (independently, back in the 1930s) by another sceptic in Frank Morison’s Who moved the stone? (still in print).

The point is this: it’s very easy to dismiss the resurrection with the comment, “Dead people do not come alive again.” This is usually the case. The problem is that this is usually done without examining the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection. You have read here of two individuals who set out to prove that it was a hoax and found that they came to believe it actually happened. Do you dare to properly examine the evidence or are you satisfied with your opinions, whether they are well founded or not?
