Two Men with One Heart

Peter Adams writes about how his ministry with Daniel Cozens began:

"Having finally retired from working part-time for TFM, George Martin, Chair of Trustees, has written me a letter in which he says, 'Your walk with Daniel has been so close you are like two men with one heart'.  I couldn’t put it better myself!

Unbeknown to Daniel, we first met at a conference in 1980 at which the speaker had academically theorised about process evangelism for a good hour, qualifying this that and the other, and then invited comments from the audience. Daniel stood up and said, 'Whenever I preach the Gospel, if it’s the first time, or the fifty-first time the people have heard it, I always believe that today is the day of salvation for them and I therefore call them to give their lives to Christ – and they do, they always do'.  I thought, that man has it, that is the kind of evangelist I could work with.

Three years passed and we had not met, but the time had arrived in my parish ministry in Marks Tey, Aldham and Little Tey for a mission and we were praying for guidance about whom we should invite to be our evangelist.  Then the brief but powerful speech that Daniel had made at the conference came to mind which I shared with the prayer group.  Nobody knew of him, and I hadn’t talked with him at the conference.  But what he said had evidently impacted me.

This man will shake the apples from the trees.

So we invited Daniel to meet the three PCC’s – which is always a delight for any evangelist! – and eventually we asked him to lead our parish mission.  I remember saying, 'This man will shake the apples from the trees.'  He did.  Seventy-five of them, which completely transformed the spiritual life of the parishes.
That was 1983, and that is how it began.  By 1985 I was on the road with Daniel as Minister of Missions."

Peter will be writing more about their work together as itinerant evangelists in the next printed newsletter from TFM due out in January 2015.
