In the Six Big Questions booklet I used a survey about whether Jesus existed and, if so, who he was. Here are some revised multiple choice responses, each with a supplementary question; consider your own answer in each case and then discuss as a group:
  • I don’t believe Jesus existed as a historical person. How do you handle the non-biblical evidence?
  • I believe he existed but I don’t trust the Bible’s accounts. On what grounds do you doubt its reliability?
  • I believe Jesus existed and was more than just a man. If more than a man, what is your view of him and on what do you   base your evidence?
  • I have become convinced Jesus was the Son of God. What has convinced you and what is your next step?
3          Quite often I encounter people who have great respect for Jesus but really dislike the church as an institution (or indeed organised religion per se). In many ways, the Da Vinci Code falls into this category by claiming that the church is behind an enormous conspiracy. Philip Pullman and the New Atheists seem to have gone further in attacking the very person of Christ. Why? Is it merely a feature of a society where virtually nothing is held sacred anymore? Or is it in frustration that faith continues to flourish worldwide, despite a concerted attack from the media and liberal secularists?
