Is evolution by random chance?

Two biological scientists demonstrate in very different contexts how evolution does not proceed by blind chance. Their research shows that pathways are limited or repeated. The point of these clips is not to produce a proof that God must therefore exist; rather the scientists want to understand better the nature of evolutionary pathways and then allow the results to raise questions about what might underlie this.

For those with a scientific or specifically biological science background, I would recommend Simon Conway-Morris’ book Life’s Solution, which looks at this whole issue of convergence in much more detail.  It is a fairly technical read and might be hard going for a non-scientist (see the additional resources page for details).
